Good news for once: eBay is one of the few major platforms that still regularly uses genuine promo codes typed in at checkout. The less good news: how they actually work is a bit more complicated than at a typical store, and that's usually where readers get tripped up without meaning to.
Three very different kinds of eBay discounts
"Platform" eBay codes are issued directly by eBay and either apply automatically or show up as a code on the eBay Deals page. They're usually time-limited, sometimes capped at a maximum discount amount, and often restricted to certain categories (electronics, fashion, home).
Seller discounts are offered by an individual seller on their own store and only appear on their listings. A code that works perfectly for one seller will do nothing for another, even on an identical product — this is the number one source of confusion in forum threads.
Auctions and "Best Offer" aren't codes at all, but they remain the most powerful negotiating lever on eBay: on a fixed-price listing, the "Make Offer" button often gets you 10-20% off directly from the seller, no code required.
How to check whether an eBay code is still active
- Go to the eBay Deals page: current platform-wide offers are listed there along with their end date.
- On a product page, look for a "Coupon available" tag right under the price — it's the most reliable sign of an instantly applicable discount.
- Add the item to your cart and enter the code in the dedicated field before checkout: the total should update instantly.
- If nothing changes, check the minimum cart value and the product category — eBay codes very often exclude gift cards, real estate, and vehicles.
Why your eBay code gets rejected
- The code is seller-specific and you're buying from a different one.
- The minimum cart value isn't met (often $25 or $50 minimum).
- The product category is excluded (commonly collectibles or auto parts).
- The code has a per-account usage limit you've already hit.
- The code has simply expired — eBay rotates these fast, sometimes within just a few days.
Saving on eBay without a code
eBay Plus (where available) gives you free, fast shipping on a selection of listings. The eBay Bucks loyalty program, where it exists in your country, gives back a percentage of your purchases as store credit. And watching for auctions ending late at night remains, even today, one of the best ways to get a genuinely low price on used gear.
